From its roots as a hardworking coal mining town to its place today as one of the Northern Front Range’s fastest-growing communities, Firestone has always been shaped by resilience, opportunity, and strong community ties. Located just north of Denver and perfectly positioned between I-25 and US-85, Firestone offers small-town charm with easy access to the Rockies, nearby cities, and the outdoor lifestyle Colorado is known for.
A Town Forged in Early Colorado History
Firestone’s story begins well before its official founding. In the mid-1800s, the St. Vrain Valley was home to early settlers and pioneers carving out a life along Colorado’s northern plains. Thomas McKissick and his brothers, John and William, were among them; members of the St. Vrain Valley Home Guard, a volunteer militia formed during the Colorado War of the 1860s.
Between 1863 and 1865, the Home Guard built a fortress known as Fort Junction. Today, that land is preserved as St. Vrain State Park, a reminder of the region’s earliest days and its enduring connection to the land.
In 1872, the McKissick brothers discovered coal in southwestern Weld County and established Colorado’s first production coal mine, the McKissick Mine, located where Saddleback Golf Club now sits. That discovery laid the foundation for the community that would eventually become Firestone.
From Coal Mine to Community
The Town of Firestone was officially established in 1908, named after Ohio investor Jacob H. Firestone, following the creation of the Firestone Coal Company. The Denslow Coal and Land Company dedicated a perpetual right-of-way to the public in 1907, defining the town’s original boundaries and setting the stage for growth.
For decades, coal mining was the heartbeat of Firestone. Five mines operated in town until 1947, including the Grant Mine, which produced more than two million tons of coal, enough to fill a coal train stretching 200 miles.
When the mines closed, Firestone didn’t fade. Instead, it adapted.
The former rail line that once carried coal was transformed into the Firestone Trail, now an 11-mile pathway connecting neighborhoods, parks, and nearby towns in the Carbon Valley linking Firestone, Frederick, and Dacono into what locals still fondly call the Tri-Towns.
“Firestone’s story is one of hard work, adaptation, and building something lasting.”
A Small Town Grows with Purpose
For much of the 20th century, Firestone remained a quiet, close-knit town. But starting in 2000, growth accelerated dramatically. The population surged from fewer than 2,000 residents to more than 10,000 by 2010, a growth rate of over 430 percent, making Firestone the fastest-growing community in Colorado at the time.
That growth has continued with intention. Today, Firestone is home to more than 16,000 residents who value quality schools, well-planned neighborhoods, and a strong sense of community.
Landmarks like the Firestone Centennial Clock and Time Capsule, dedicated in 2009 at Jacob H. Firestone Memorial Park, reflect that pride. The time capsule, set to be opened in 2059, stands as a symbol of a town always looking ahead while honoring where it came from.
Outdoor Living, Front Range Style
Firestone’s location makes it a haven for families who love the outdoors. St. Vrain State Park offers birdwatching, fishing, camping, and miles of easy trails across its 600+ acres. Saddleback Golf Club, consistently ranked among the friendliest courses in the country, brings neighbors together on and off the fairways.
With access to hiking, biking, fishing, and open space plus a growing mix of local restaurants and community events Firestone blends convenience with connection.
“A Community in Motion” isn’t just a motto, it’s a way of life.
