Nestled in the heart of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Area, Aurora, Colorado, is a vibrant and diverse community with a rich history and a promising future. As the third-most-populous city in the state, Aurora boasts a unique blend of residential, business, and industrial growth, all of which contribute to its dynamic character.
A Journey Through Aurora’s History
The City of Aurora‘s story began in 1891 when it was incorporated as the town of Fletcher, named after one of its developers, Donald Fletcher. Starting with just 39 residents, the town quickly began to grow, despite early challenges like droughts and economic downturns such as the Silver Panic of 1893. Renamed Aurora in 1907, the city continued to expand, and by 1928, it had grown to over 2,000 residents.
From these modest beginnings, Aurora has evolved into a major city within the Front Range Urban Corridor, covering over 164 square miles with a population of more than 386,000 residents. The city’s growth was accelerated during the post-war years, thanks to the establishment of Lowry Air Force Base, Fitzsimons Army Hospital, and Buckley Space Force Base, making Aurora a hub for military families and contributing significantly to its diverse community.
Aurora’s historic landmarks and districts offer a glimpse into the city’s evolution, from its beginnings as a 19th-century trolley town on the edge of a burgeoning metropolis to a thriving suburb in the 1950s. These historic homes, businesses, and sites serve as tangible reminders of Aurora’s rich past. Preserving and sharing these valuable resources is essential, ensuring that the community can continue to appreciate their significance today and for future generations.
