Commerce City has always been a community defined by hard work and progress. Once a patchwork of farms and rail lines, it has grown into one of Colorado’s most vital hubs of industry, logistics, and opportunity. Today, it continues to honor its hardworking roots while embracing a bold vision for the future.
A Walk Through Commerce City’s History
Commerce City’s story begins long before it became an industrial hub. In the mid-1800s, trading forts dotted the banks of the South Platte. Louis Vasquez built one of the earliest posts, Fort Convenience, near today’s 72nd Avenue, serving fur trappers and travelers along Clear Creek.
By the 1850s, settlers were arriving in covered wagons, claiming land through the Homestead Act and raising crops and livestock along Sand Creek. Communities like Dupont, Derby, and Irondale sprang up around stage routes and rail stations, bringing with them one-room schoolhouses, farms, and dairies that shaped daily life.
Through the late 1800s and early 1900s, cemeteries, granges, and schools marked the area’s growth, while telephone lines and new roads connected neighbors and commerce. Farming and ranching thrived until the 1920s, when industry began to move in grain elevators, trout hatcheries, and eventually oil refineries reshaped the local economy.
World War II brought the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, adding another layer to the city’s legacy. After the war, Adams City schools expanded, neighborhoods multiplied, and in 1952 residents voted to incorporate “Commerce Town.” Just a decade later, annexation and further growth earned it full city status as Commerce City.
Since then, the community has continued to thrive; building parks, schools, businesses, and neighborhoods that reflect the resilience and vision of its people. What started as homesteads has grown into bustling industrial corridors, yet Commerce City’s hallmark of grit and opportunity remains unchanged.
“Commerce City has always been a place where grit meets opportunity.”
From Farmland to Industry
The city’s earliest decades were rooted in agriculture and transportation. Families worked the land while railroads stitched Colorado together, carrying goods and people across the state. Over time, those same rail lines and open spaces made Commerce City an attractive location for manufacturing and distribution which is a role it continues to play today.
“From railroads and farmland to industry and innovation, Commerce City continues to grow with vision.”
A Modern Hub of Growth
Fast forward to the present, and Commerce City is known for its industrial parks, thriving logistics operations, and steady influx of new businesses. Its strategic location is close to I-70, I-76, and Denver International Airport which makes it a natural hub for investment and expansion.
In recent decades, the city’s population has surged, fueled by development in the northern range between the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge and Brighton. With its eastern border adjacent to Denver International Airport and future growth areas planned further to the northeast, Commerce City continues to rise as both a commercial center and a vibrant community. As of July 1, 2025, the population is estimated at more than 73,600 residents.
But what truly sets Commerce City apart isn’t just its infrastructure or its numbers, it’s the people. This is a community defined by grit, pride, and a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude. Whether it’s longtime residents who’ve seen decades of change or newcomers chasing opportunity, there’s a shared momentum here.
