Centennial: A Colorado City Built for What’s Next

Some Colorado communities are defined by centuries of history. Centennial stands out for something different: it’s a relatively young city shaped by its residents and built with the future in mind.

According to the City of Centennial, the community officially became a city on February 7, 2001, after a grassroots incorporation effort centered on greater local control. In 2000, 77% of voters approved incorporation, and today Centennial is home to more than 108,000 residents.

And 2026 marks a milestone: Centennial is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Centennial: A Colorado City Built for What’s Next

A City Designed Around Community

Centennial has quickly developed an identity of its own.

Neighborhoods, businesses, parks, trails, shopping, dining, and community gathering spaces stretch across nearly 30 square miles. The result is a city that offers convenient access to the Denver metro area while maintaining plenty of opportunities to get outside and connect closer to home.

One of its best-known gathering places is Centennial Center Park. The 11-acre park features an amphitheater, playground, splash pad, picnic areas, natural spaces, and other amenities that make it a popular destination for families and community events.

Centennial residents also have access to a broader network of recreation centers, and open spaces through the city and surrounding districts.

Fall Is a Great Time to Explore Centennial

September brings some of the best of Colorado together: cooler mornings, comfortable afternoons, football weekends, changing leaves, and plenty of reasons to spend time outside.

Centennial adds a little color of its own.

Centennial Chalk Art Festival — September 12

Head to The Streets at SouthGlenn on Saturday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Centennial’s annual Chalk Art Festival.

Nearly 100 local artists are expected to transform the sidewalks into colorful works of art. Visitors can also enjoy live music, local vendors, and restaurants, check out the Children’s Market, and vote for their favorite creation.

It’s exactly the kind of event that showcases Centennial’s community spirit.

25 Years and Just Getting Started

Centennial’s story is unusual because its residents didn’t simply inherit their city – they helped create it.

What began with a conversation among five local leaders over breakfast in 1998 eventually led to thousands of petition signatures, a Colorado Supreme Court decision, a community vote, and the official creation of Centennial in 2001.

Twenty-five years later, that same spirit of involvement continues to shape the city, and Centennial is already looking ahead.

In 2023, the City created the Futures Committee, bringing together City leaders, staff, and community partners to think intentionally about what Centennial may face over the next 20 years. By exploring emerging trends and engaging with thought leaders, the committee is helping the City prepare for change while shaping a future that reflects the needs and priorities of its residents.

It’s a fitting next chapter for a city that was built through community participation in the first place: honoring what has been created while continuing to ask what Centennial can become.

At Red Rock Roofing, we’re proud to serve homeowners, businesses, and property owners throughout Colorado communities like Centennial. The buildings we protect are more than structures; they’re the homes, workplaces, and gathering places where communities grow, adapt, and build their future.

Here’s to 25 years of Centennial and everything still ahead.
