History of Broomfield

Broomfield, Colorado, traces its roots back to the mid-nineteenth century when it emerged as a farming community. In 1884, the US Post Office established a station in the town, naming it Broomfield after the broomcorn crop that thrived in the area. The city was officially incorporated in 1961, initially part of Boulder County. However, a significant milestone occurred in 2001 when the City and County of Broomfield became Colorado’s sixty-fourth and newest county.

Long before the arrival of European settlers, the land that Broomfield now occupies was inhabited by the Arapaho and Cheyenne people. These indigenous groups had migrated to the South Platte River Valley by the early nineteenth century after conflicts with neighboring tribes. With the onset of the Colorado Gold Rush in 1858–59, farming communities sprouted up to supply food to the burgeoning mining camps in the nearby mountains.

Broomfield emerged as one of these agrarian communities due to its strategic location near the early mining sites in Boulder, Clear Creek, and Gilpin Counties. Over time, it evolved into a thriving city with a rich history deeply rooted in its agricultural heritage and contributions to the development of Colorado’s mining industry.
